Ah boi stood under the void deck ay 730am and stare right into the car park. This has been his daily routine since he was 10 despite told by his mother that the bus only arrives at 8am. Now as a grown up man he still keeps to his routine, waiting for his bus to send him to the day activity centre.

“hey bus only come at 8am.... u stupid or what ?’

“ let that go school also no use lah !”

A group of school boys having their school holiday was cycling around ah boi teasing him. This wasn't new to ah boi, he has been constantly been the subject of ridicule in his neighbourhood.

“leave him alone u punks” .... echoed the elderly man cleaning the town council estate.

The boys pedal their bikes and move on.

This old uncle was rumour to be a former commander trainer in the 80’s. Now he has aged, his only source of income is through this means. His only son after completed NS went over to stay at Batam and never returned.
Looking through his eyes i could see this old uncle determination to sustain himself through employment.

The morning crowd started to break the quietness of the estate soon. Many people passed by Ah Boi. Some would greet him, others would warn their own child never to associate with ah boi even though they are living in the same block. One old grandmother pushing her trolley basket paused and put a five dollar note in his pocket.

Ah boi stood there without any emotions. It doesn't matter if people come or go. He was just waiting for his bus.

John arrived at the school compound and parked motorbike.

‘hey u cant park here” a man in long sleeve and working pants just got out of his car.

John “why not ?”

Man “ don’t u know who am I ?, i am the school executive director !!!”

John “so? I am here to volunteer my services at the centre, if you tell me i can’t park here. I will take my leave now”

The man facial expression changed as he turn around and head towards the centre.

John placed his helmet inside the box, check his hair with the side mirror and make his way to the centre.

John “ hi you must be the HR personal I supposed to meet this morning.

Admin staff “ yes, pls fill up this form first, after which i direct you to see our boss.

A few staff came into the office and clocked the cards. Most of them rushing off to the respective duties after they are done.

John was later usher to the boss office , where the director gave him some instruction.

Director " so why have already met just now didn't we ? "

Me " yes."

D " u will be post to " zen " class . Their lead teacher is on study leave , u will work with the assistant teacher "

John was given a brief walk about at the day activity centre.

D " so you hang around here . The school buses are reaching soon."

John had finished a two year contract job at the airport and his job was made redundant. He undertook some part time job as a despatch rider , earning some money before he gets a interview for a full time job. John decided to do volunteer at the day activity centre after he did a search on the Internet.

The buses arrived at different time slot. John was tasked by some teacher what to do, ensuring the students are safe as they come down from the mini bus.

Ah boi bus arrived at the centre and he was first to come down the bus. He dash straight into the new stuff John. Ah boi reaches straight for John hand. John was caught off guard.

A lady teacher from another class place a cue card infront of Ah boi . One look at the card ah boi knew what he has to do next according to his daily schedule. Ah boi just took off and went ahead to do his stuff.

" you must be new " the lady teacher spoke.

Cyan " nice to have you with us, we need more male in our centre,"


Before john knew it , it was lunch time. During meal times both staff and students will gather at the canteen for lunch. Lunch time was a mess, many students were playing up their behavior and teachers were all out at force to manage the situations.

John class assistant teacher managed to set aside some food for me. She shouted " John come eat first "

John finished my plate with three mouthful of food. Rush off to assist in every way He could. After lunch was showering or basic grooming programe. John was shown what to do in the male toilet . By the time the students were done and settled back in the classroom it was already two pm.

The students did some art and craft . John was tasked to work with Ah boi. Ah boi was good in painting. He needs only to take a look a picture once and he could reproduce a similar piece with 90 per cent resemblance. Time went by fast, and it was time for the students to leave the centre. As the school,bus drivers have to make a long route back dropping students along different routes.

It was end of the day and John was allow to leave as he was only doing volunteering work.

John took a shower immediately after reaching home. He rested for a while before he got changed and head off to report for his nite shift job as a car valet driver.

John had been doing this for some time already even went he had his full time job back at the airport. Even though the side income wasn't much , but it has helped john cover his expenses for his motorbike Installment, fuel and makan. A pool of John regular clientele would only ask for John to sent them back when they requested for drive home services. Through social media John managed to had a steady follower of 20 clients who request for John to handle their cars when they come to club at this particular joint.

The next day John reported back to the day activity centre as usual. He was call to the office to see the executive director.

Director " how was your experience in our centre ? "

John. " it was an eye opening experienced . This is something you can't learnt from books. Everyday is a new experience. I have still yet to see the full spectrum of it "

Director " great! I would like to offer you a full time position as our teacher assistant . I would offer you a starting pay of $1?00 a month, it will be backdated to the first date you volunteer at the centre "

John' mind was ticking away. This isn't half of what John was paid while working at the airport.nevertheless John stood up And shake the director's hand as he took up the job.

After the students departed for day, the executive director called for a short staff meeting. He broke the news to the staff, that John has joined the centre and will be going thru different classes to gain experience as part of his three month probation. Most of the lady teachers came and shook johns hand to welcome him. The three other male teacher couldn't be bother and left the meeting room. John turn to look at the centre' s program manager. He was flooded with the various lead teacher , looks like Every lead teacher wants John to be in their class as they regular assistant teacher. after the meeting John went to the admin office to fill up other details such as inter bank GIRO bank account.

While the staff were allowed to leave earlier , the admin staff office only leaves at 6pm. John decided to get change and train for 2.4km run as he still needs todo his reservist.

John came back 30 mins with a soaking wet t shirt. He head straight to the washroom . He pushes open the door and a voice shouted

" ouch "

John " I am sorry"

It was cyan, with only the towel wrap round her body and the other hand holding the shower kit basket.

Cyan faced flbitush with redness

John " I didn't know u were standing behind this door, and I am sorry....but wait isn't this the male toilet "

Cyan " I usually shower here around this time , there won't be anyone around so I just do a quick shower before I head back.

There was a silence a weird for about 5 second,

John " erhhhh.... U carry on then."


John rushed down to his class, took his stuff and leave the centre.

Ah boi arrived at the void deck. He walks towards the ma am store and buys a snack to eat at home. Ah boi hasn't master money concept and give a 50 cent coin to the uncle each time he purchases something. Ah boi mom usually pass some cash to the shop owner at the end of each month.

He heads straight to the TV and puts on his favorite video tape . This is the routine he does each day after he gets back to school. After which he will catch a nap before he takes his dinner.


John went to the nearby coffeeshop and order a 100 plus. He was half through the drink when he saw teacher CYan walking towards the coffeeshop. John change his sitting position with his back towards her, taking out his handphone pretending to check his SMS.

Cyan " hey u are here also ? " .... Patting John on his shoulder.

John " oh yah...."

Cyan pull the chair and sat next to John.

Cyan " huh, u still embarrass over the incident just now ? I see my students naked everyday as they do their shower programe. U only see my shoulder blade Leh . Don't be a square.! "

John laughed nervously ....." Ha ha "

Cyan was sharing some stuff about work and slowly the topic went to her. She revealed that she was in the centre working for four years. Had a boyfriend for two years and broke off 6 months ago.

John " I am sorry to hear abt ...."

Cyan " no lah , sorry for holding u back. I better get going "

Cyan stood up and took her leave. John looking at his wrist watch decided to have a meal before heading straight to report for his evening part time car jockey job.

John arrive at work early. He went to the washroom to wash up before Donning the company polo T shirt. John took out a book that cyan had loan it to him and started reading it.

It was close to 10 pm when a white Porsche came.

Car valet supervisor " John , your regular . Pls take over "

John stood up and went to position himself. The car halt and John opens the door.

Lady in a tight fitting dress with a red killer heels was preparing to step up.

John " good evening Miss low "

Lady " John , I told u before to just call me Rachel "

John smiled offer his hand to assist Rachel out of the car.

Rachel is a lady in her early 40s working in lawyer firm. She comes to party every fortnightly. There are no shortage of guys hanging around her. Sometimes she comes with her lawyer friends , sometimes she comes alone and make new friends. John is one such person that Rachel got to know over a period of time. Rachel only wants John to send her back for the drive home service.

Rachel " have you had something to eat?

John " yes I did , u have a great time I will see u later"

Rachel squeezed John hand before letting go and made her way in. Many guys were looking at Rachel back view as she catwalk her way in.

It was a busy night, John had already valet park over 30 cars. His shirt was already wet, walking up and down to park or get the car ready,
