Actually it really doesn’t matter just that if a girl gets caught she might be sent back suddenly upon orders (not sure if rules have changed now that China is literally closed and people can’t fly in readily) or they may be kept here on white card for a v v long time.
For girls who can slowly decide and plan when they wanna go home, most likely they are safe they are just homesick that’s all.

If a girl is issued a white card, she needs to inform the China embassy and get the procedure to apply for health code(健康码). It’s a very tedious process, they won’t get to renew their white card unlike the others who have expired permit but no crimes. If unlucky (or say lucky) kena covid, inform embassy and they will contact ICA to extend the stay by a month or so. Policy may change anytime though, but like what you say they may be homesick, or urgent issues that needs them to go back (like Ningxia previously). Else most girls will work until their permit expires
