Sky sources understand Manchester United have opened talks over a £100m deal to sign their former player Paul Pogba. With that in mind, we reflect on examples of when clubs spent big to sign players who slipped from their grasp...

All these are huge amount of signings which Liverpool cannot afford.
Hello, Liverpool have spent over £30m before for players. Sadly all CMI in Liverpool! Just hope the latest £30+m signing, Sadio Mane, turns out to be a success instead.

Paul Pongba, well I guess he may be in a different super elite category? That said, is there really a need for Liverpool to buy such a player at a world record price (or thereabouts) to ensure success?

Look at Gundogan, Mkhitaryan, Lewandowski, Reus etc from Dortmund. They were spotted as potentials, bought at relatively reasonable prices and brought Dortmund and Klopp great success. Ditto for Leicester and say even West Ham's Dimitri Payet.

What Liverpool need to do is to unearth another Suarez, Torres, Gerrard etc. No point breaking bank.
